GROUP MOBILITY IN PUTIGNANO, ITALY
JANUARY 28TH TO FEBRUARY 4TH / 2024

The sad farewell begins between the manifesto for peace, flags, signatures, tears and promises of eternal love. Next, the IES Isla de la Deva presents our center, the next meeting place for this group of friends. At 10:30 we take the train to Bari, capital of the Apulia region. There we visited the Norman Swabian castle of Frederick II; It is a fortress built on an ancient Byzantine site, in which several Norman towers have left their mark and in which Isabella of Aragon also lived in the 20th century. We enter through the main door - adorned with the imperial eagle, symbol of Frederick I - and enter several rooms where we can see reproductions and originals of architectural and sculptural remains and even ceramic pieces used as kitchenware. Finally, we enter one of the best preserved rooms, where a careful audiovisual montage allows us to recreate different moments of the day in the life of the castle. In the morning, windows that open to the sea and the gardens, birds chirping and the sound of the water moved by the ferris wheel; children's games and the running around of the chickens chopping the corn. In the afternoon, courtly leisure: lutes, looms, writing and laughter. Mirrors, silks, pearls and ladies who slide between the arches preparing for the night's party. Finally, to the sound of the music and the dances we find ourselves involved in the coming and going of the dancers, their laughter and the echoes of the world that once was. After the visit, we went to the Basilica of San Nicola, patron saint of Bari. The children of the city are lucky, because they also receive gifts on December 6, the day of the celebration of this name day. We visited the church and the crypt where the remains of the saint are found. Saint Nicholas, born in Türkiye, in the 3rd century AD. C., he dedicated all the fortune he had inherited from his family to helping and protecting the weakest, especially young people and children, hence he has gone down in European tradition as the character who brings gifts to the youngest. After the death of Saint Nicholas, his tomb in Myra (Turkey) soon became a place of pilgrimage and his relics were considered miraculous. When the region was occupied by the Turks (in the 11th century) the Venetians tried to take them, but it was the Barese who took the relics to Apulia, in 1087. After the visits, we have free time to eat and we will return to Putignano on the 16:20 train. It is our last day, but a very special night still awaits us in which we can enjoy another taste of the city's Carnival. A city today bustling and lively, full of people, music, lights, Farinellas, ribbons and colorful decorations... At eight in the afternoon, we will mix with the inhabitants of the city to celebrate "The Bear Festival." A parade of masks and creatures moves through the narrow streets of the old town of Putignano; They dance to the sound of rhythmic music, with ancestral airs, until they go on stage, located in "Piazza Farinella". It is a humorous performance in which the Putignano dialect is used; The creatures dialogue with the bear, comment on aspects of local politics and decide whether the winter will be long (the bear has gone out and has been able to make its house for the winter) or short (the bear has not been able to go out). Following the motto of this year's Carnival (a journey through time), we go back to the time of Frederick II and remember the attack he carried out against the city of Putignano. The bear is crowned with the imperial eagle of Frederick II. As has become customary, the students, Spanish and Italian, get together to participate in the party and have dinner together on their last night in Putignano. |
